Thru It's pages I have found inspiration to write these few words from personal experience with Kyo Kushin Kai Kan. It started 28 years ago when I was twelve years of age in my home town of Arecibo Puerto Rico. One day in 1979 walking thru the neiborghood, I stop by a nearby Dojo in which this blackbelt was giving a demo of the style. So In front of everybody I challenge him by giving him a piece of concrete from a broken sidewalk that has been fix my public works. Then, I said to him 'if you are able to break it in piece, I start taking classe tomorrow'. He accepted the chanllenge of a naive twelve year old boy and commit to the task at hand. Time went by ( 05-10 min) when we all saw the first piece of concrete falling apart from this masive piece of manmade rock. You would think that that was enough for him but you would think wrong, He continued to pound the rock (about 12' in diameter) which by know I already forgot about it thru conversations with other kids present that day. Just before I was leaving he stood up an called me in front of everybody and said ' Pick up the pieces and I will see you tomorrow for class. In that moment I felt ashame for what I did, but at the same time, it was my biggest lesson on commitment, leadership by example, and responsibility. That momemnt felt like no one else was present, just me standing in front of this blackbelt with it's bleeding nuckles and the pile of concrete rocks in between of us. My Sensei was Jose Antonio Vargas (which I consider as a big brother) who inturn was student of Jose Angel Martinez President of the PR Branch. Both were students of Shigeru Oyama School in NY during the early 70's . Know, I have a son of my own who happens to be twelve years of age and with an interested in the Martial Arts. Know, like then, I found myself again front of this blackbelt with it's bleeding nuckles and a pile of concrete rocks between us. Again thanks for the inspiration.
